Who We Are

The company was founded in 1958 by the late Terry and Margaret Johnsey, pictured above.

Johnsey Estates is a privately owned property business which operates within it's heartland in South Wales. It has two divisions.

  • Investment portfolio of leisure, retail, office  and industrial/warehousing.
  • Development portfolio with some of the region’s most outstanding opportunities available.  The company owns and manages all its own assets.

We are long established, having been based in the Newport area for nearly 60 years. We are now a second generation family business. Our aim is to invest for the long term.

What We Do

We started as a property development business but, over time, have evolved into two complementary divisions. We own a property investment portfolio of over 1.5m sq ft centred around Mamhilad Park Estate, which generates a repetitive rental income. We are constantly seeking to improve and upgrade our investment portfolio to ensure that we maintain occupancy levels and continue to provide good quality space at affordable levels.

Our tenants are drawn from both the private and public sector. The common theme is that we are user friendly, straightforward and work with our occupiers to provide the accommodation appropriate to their evolving business needs.

Our development property owns key sites in outstanding positions. We know our market place and have historically acquired strategically located land with potential to enhance value through the planning and development process. 

Typically we buy green or brown field sites with potential to add value. We take the land through the planning process using both in house and external professional expertise with a view to either developing the sites ourselves against either pre-sales or pre-lettings or selling sites with planning consent to the national housebuilders with whom we work closely. We have a reputation for enhancing value through astute asset management based on detailed knowledge of the market place.

Our Management Team

Andrew Wilkinson

Chairman

Andrew became a non Executive Director of Johnsey Estates UK Limited in August 2008 and, following the death of the Company's founder Terry Johnsey became Chairman in August 2011. Previously he worked for HSBC latterly as an Area Director and then as a Divisional Credit and Risk Controller and held Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. He had extensive experience of Commercial and Corporate Banking , latterly in South Wales but also spent time as an Assistant Regional Director Operations within the City of London with a principle focus on change management and Strategic Planning. Outside interests have included a significant non Executive involvement in Higher Education with a number of appointments held as well as a range of Non Executive Chair roles.

James Crawford

Chief Executive Officer

James became Chief Executive Officer of Johnsey Estates UK Ltd in May 2012. He holds a degree in Urban Land Economics and is a chartered surveyor with 30 years experience in the property industry. He is a property investor and developer with detailed knowledge and understanding of property finance and banking. James has held Director positions in market leading companies within the UK including a publicly quoted property business. Since 2008 James has built a portfolio of senior appointments within the industry and is a member of the Investment Property Forum. He has also sat on the board of various charities and undertaken substantial fund raising activities.

Wendy Nutman

Non Executive Director

Wendy helped build the company from inception, working alongside her cousin Terry Johnsey, the Founder and Chairman of Johnsey Estates until his death in 2011. Thanks to her dedication and professionalism she has always played a critical role in the company’s success. Wendy was company secretary until her retirement in December 2015 but remains a director of the company serving in a non-executive capacity.

Michael Berry

Advisor to the Board

Mike qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1970. He joined Maxwells Chartered Accountants in 1973 and has been Senior Partner since 1982. He is also a Chartered Tax Adviser and holds an Insolvency Licence. He is mainly involved in the accounting and taxation issues relating to family owned businesses where he has been able to apply his extensive taxation experience to ensure maximum advantages for his clients. He has previously been involved in the direct accounting and taxation affairs of the Johnsey Estates Group for almost 40 years and now becomes an Adviser to the Board where his knowledge and experience of the companies is of considerable assistance. He and his firm have always lent considerable support to sporting, community and other recreational institutions in the Somerset area.

Peter Downes

Property Consultant

Peter joined Johnsey Estates as a consultant in 2013. He has specific responsibility for the company's property development portfolio, including the flagship project at Mamhilad and mixed use scheme on a prominent 15 acre site at Abergavenny. Peter has previously held senior positions within the property industry, including in-house corporate roles for multi National companies.

Geraint Bowen

Financial Controller and Company Secretary

Geraint joined Johnsey Estates as Financial Controller and Company Secretary in November 2015. He holds a degree in Business Studies and is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Since graduating in 2003 he has gained a wide range of management, financial and project accounting experiences within a number of different sectors. Prior to joining JEUK his most recent role was working within a major construction and facilities management contract with the MoD.

Russell Nutman

Property Manager

Russell joined Johnsey Estates in 1984 as a multi skilled operative, progressing to Site Manager. He was promoted to Property Manager in 2012 and has full control for the day to day operation of all sites and buildings and also manages the internal and external teams.

Gemma Johnsey Plumley

Marketing Manager

Gemma joined the company in an executive capacity in October 2015, having held a non executive role since 2011. Gemma is the marketing manager for the company and is in charge of office lettings at Mamhilad Park Estate. Prior to joining the company Gemma was an International Show Jumper, competing at top level. She is a grand daughter of the company's founders the late Terry and Margaret Johnsey.

Claire Guest

Finance Assistant

Claire joined Johnsey Estates in 2002, as secretary to the Estates Manager. She now works as finance assistant, undertaking sales ledger, credit control and other finance duties as well as a tenant liaison function. 

Sarah Addison

Finance Assistant

Sarah joined Johnsey Estates in 1989. She is a Finance Assistant undertaking purchase ledger, other finance and administrative duties.   

 

Isabelle Bateman

Lettings & Development surveyor

Known as Izzy the 24-year-old property professional is charged with handling the Pontypool-based company’s varied estates portfolio at Mamhilad Park Estate, Pontypool.

Originally from Warwickshire and now living in Newport Izzy graduated in International fashion marketing from Manchester Metropolitan University before gaining masters degrees at The Royal Agricultural University one in real estate and a second in business management.

Izzy said: “I started working as a graduate surveyor in Canary Wharf, London, for a small restructuring company. This was followed by a short amount of time working in Surrey for a property consultancy firm.
